The front cover photograph shows rapper Lil Wayne at a high angle giving thumbs up to the camera.
He is dressed in a Black Baggy tee shirt which says, 'I AM HIP-HOP' Not only does the camera angle show authority but the text on his clothing also shows slight arrogance as well as dominance.
The layout of the front cover is not very busy and is quite spacious. He is wearing a cap and has dreadlocks and also a very smug look on his face. The title of the magazine is in white text in front of a red background.
The background colour is a sophisticated grey showing different tones and shades. The colour of the background brings out the boldness in the text and image. The text is all in block capitals and sans serif. Below his name shows the subtitle,’ Bites his tongue for no one.' This quote describing how he is not afraid to say how he feels linking to his gangster and hip hop persona.
Denotation: I see a man (rapper lil wayne) standing and wearing all black. His top says ‘I am hip-pop’ and on the top right hand side it says ‘XXL’. Their two coverlines and a main coverline.
Connotation: The fact that his wearing black represents no emotions, black is a dark and lifeless. It’s a kind of ‘no mercy’ type of colour. He may be wearing this to show he has no time to play its stickily business. The top says ‘I am hip-pop’, lil wayne is a rapper and during his 26 years of being in the game he has increased his fan based, popularity and his name for himself. He has being put in the Top 10 Biggest Hip-pop rapper. The name of the magazine ‘XXL’ may connote the fact that in most rap music there is quite a lot of swearwords. It may also mean very, very large …. So this may mean the only put big rappers in the game on their front cover of their magazine. The main coverline ‘Lil Wayne BITES GIS TONGE FOR NO ONE’ this connotes that lil Wayne says what’s on his mind, he speaks how he feels he doesn’t hind it.
Mise-en-scene
Costume: his not wearing nothing extravagant his simply wearing all black. This costume may have been chosen because rappers don’t normally dress up; they play it cool and keep it simple.
Setting: There is no setting however, the grey background represents simplicity, once again going back to the rapper rules, ‘play it cool’.
Lighting: the light is high key, but with simple colours; black and white it’s meant to be day time.
NVC : He looks like he know his the man, and he know what his doing. his very confident with him self.
Facial expression: His looking straight into the camera.
Body language: His standing up tall to show his status has growing.
The writing of the article font is in San Serif.
Masterhead- ‘XXL’ the master head is very distinctive white with red background. The font used is famous for clothes size and what people wear. Also XXL is very famous and long running magazine, they force on hip-pop because they are a large company they mostly put famous rapper on the front cover.
Target audience: the target audience will mostly be male and a few females ages 16-50. They will have to be interested in rap and the hip-pop culture.
Coverlines- the main coverline relates to his photograph ‘lil wayne BITES HIS TONGE FOR NO ONE’. This is making a reference to his called ‘millionaire’. This music is very fast and controlling he says stuff that’s you wouldn’t want your young children hearing yet he does it because it’s what HE wants to say. There hardly anyone else featuring the magazine the only person mentioned was big poppa who is also a rapper.
